D-Tagatose, a natural monosaccharide with a fructose-like structure, is characterized by its low absorption rate in the body. Only 20% of the ingested tagatose passes through the small intestine and is then processed via the same metabolic pathways as fructose, while the remaining 80% reaches the large intestine. There, tagatose serves as a nutrient for gut bacteria, is fermented, and can thus support the balance of the intestinal flora. With a sweetness similar to that of table sugar, but a significantly lower calorie content, tagatose is a healthy, natural sugar alternative.
